Minfulness: Cultivating Curiosity & Developing Breathing Space and Clarity

Mindful

Personal coaching is about being listened to but properly listened to both deeply and mindfully. You’ll have my whole presence to hold your space and allow you to say things you’ve never said out loud.

I’m often asked what mindfulness really is and why we should bother. Isn’t it just meditation and maybe some yoga? But it’s so much more but like many things we experience, it’s very hard to find the right words. For example, how do you really explain to someone what chocolate tastes like if they’ve never had it before? The taste, the temperature, the texture, the after taste… and what if you add a strawberry?

A key mindfulness figure, Jon-Kabat Zinn states mindfulness as “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally”. Another of my favourite words is kindfulness. If we don’t pay attention kindly then, by nature, our brains will judge because that is what they are designed to do.

So much suffering lies in rehashing the past or planning over and over again the future. Being mindful is one aspect of personal coaching that allows us some breathing space. We also learn about ourselves and what we truly want in life. We learn to slow down but focus more and achieve more because we are less distracted by unhelpful thoughts. Through this, you also can learn to manage life more wisely and more calmly.

Compassion

Compassion is often confused with sympathy and empathy. Compassion is about wishing someone else well-being and happiness. It is about connecting with people at a deep level and treating them with kindness and respect such that they can find their path to happiness. However, compassion starts with ourselves because if we can’t be compassionate to ourselves then how can we be compassionate to others?

Being compassionate with yourself allows you to accept yourself as human. With personal coaching, you can learn to understand and value your weakness. You can finally get rid of the masks you wear and be authentic. And compassion cultivates compassion in others. Are you more motivated by the stick or the carrot?

Resilience

Resilience is not just about bouncing back from adversity and issues in life but it’s about accepting that life is suffering. We cannot remove the pain but we can relate to it differently by accepting that it is part of life. With personal coaching, you explore resilience and how it allows us to keep perspective and to see crises as opportunities for growth. Resilience can be cultivated and you can deepen your resilience and strengthen your toolbox to help yourself through the tough times.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: MBSR programme in 1979 whilst working with chronic pain patients based on buddhism and buddhist practices.

The course isn’t just something I provide but it’s also my inspiration in everything I do, including personal coaching. The course doesn’t just cover meditation but it also helps you explore curiosity, kindness, compassion, non-judgement,  non-striving, acceptance, gratitude, patience, trust, generosity … even humour. It’s a tough journey and humour helps us not take ourselves too seriously.

We learn these attitudes and how to practice and strengthen them in our everyday lives. We learn loving-kindness and compassion meditation practices along with group discussions and self-inquiry. These tools allow us to make wiser decisions in life and to go from drifting to living meaningfully.
